Fashion Makeup: Parade Jewelry in Harper's BAZAAR

One the great things about doing weddings is I get to meet brides with many different backgrounds, in varied industries, and from different cities.
After doing makeup and hair for Hilary's wedding last summer, she contacted me about another job. The jewelry company she works for, Parade, decided to do something big! They wanted to place an ad in a huge fashion magazine, and they needed a makeup & hair artist to create a mood for the model.  I created a smokey eye makeup look using plums and greys because of her amazing green eyes and auburn hair.

I was so excited to get this chance. Parade is a family owned jewelry company that designs exquisite pieces for everyday, special occasions and weddings. We went all around downtown LA with our gorgeous Italian model. Photographer Chance Road created beautiful, urban and romantic images. Having a tear sheet for Harper's BAZAAR is pretty awesome! Hope you like the rest of the images from that afternoon.

Rustic Wedding @Ojai Valley Inn + Mindy Weiss Events

bridal hair with braid and loose waves

This is one of my top weddings for 2011! I met the bride, Kristen, when she was a bridesmaid in her to-be sister in-law's wedding in 2010. I love doing hair for blonde because their hair has such great texture. For her role as a bridesmaid, I gave Kristen an up-do with a braid. When it came time for her own wedding a year later, she told me everyone raved about her hair then. I was her favorite hair style! It was an easy decision to add a similar braid to her bridal hair style. Looks amazing, right?!

There is Christina, the earlier bride, 2nd to the bride's left below! Such a beauty. Kristen's bridesmaids were family and friends. All equally fun, beautiful, and their varying looks gave me, Samantha and Kate opportunities to try different makeup and hair styles.

Kristen is a girl with STYLE! As you can see from her exquisite gown, and flowers, she has impeccable taste. It's no surprise that she hired Beverly Hills celebrity event designer, Mindy Weiss. Mindy is one of the top event planners and lifestyle experts in the country. I had the opportunity to hang with her that day and I can tell you she is supremely sweet and funny! Very down to earth and committed to her twitter fans! On Mindy's blog, you can see more pictures by the elegant & talented Joy Marie.

Conscious Couture meets Conscious Makeup @Blindfold Mag

next issue of the magazine out soon!

Many of my clients know me as the "mineral makeup" artist, and for good reason. I've been sticking to my guns with stocking my kit with professional-grade mineral makeups. I admit I flirt with Makeup For Ever's HD line, and MAC shadows, but I am still about healthy makeup and healthy skin!

Designer Lindee Daniel creates eco dresses with the same order of consciousness. Her belief in artfully and meticulously crafted clothing sets her apart most gown designers in Los Angeles, or the country. Lindee also has an unwavering commitment to all things natural, while also giving back to the community 5% of sales to help youth in the skid row area of Los Angeles.

Earlier this year I met Lindee through my friends Jen and Nate Berggren, of B&G Photography. Our goal was to create a wedding couture photoshoot, one that would give some edge to the normal, Anthropology wedding look we've been used to.

I created this look based on the kabuki, Elizabethan, and Victorian styles. I used white clown makeup on the model's face, neck, arms and chest. Rosy cheeks, lips are a burnt rust color, and the eyes are a smokey, deep emerald green.  I also emphasized the brows by making them darker and thicker with an auburn pencil and brown powder. I put the model's hair in a very high ponytail, gelled around it to make it very smooth, and used a curling iron, pins and hairspray to create the bun.

Blindfold Magazine is a socially conscious magazine about people and companies doing things outside of the box with an emphasis on giving back.

My thanks to Lindee, Nate & Jen for bringing me on this exciting project! Here are some more pictures from that day:

Modern Romantic Wedding Video: Janine + Jonny

Today my good friend and uber talented videographer, Colin Pregent of CPVP, emailed me his finished wedding video. If you ever wondered "what's the point?" of a wedding video, Colin's masterpiece is sure to answer that questions. His style is modern, fun, romantic, and edgy. I love his choice of music too, although the happy couple could have chosen the songs themselves. This is no cheesy wedding video, but more of a cinematic-meets-music-video look at Janine and Jonny's wedding.
While I always like seeing myself at work, I am thrilled to see my former client, Sana, and her husband as stars in the video. Without her, I would not have booked this job. You can see my 2008 post on Sana's makeup + hair here.

Sleek Chignon + Seven-Degrees Wedding

The sleek chignon you see above may look simple, but let me be frank and admit that it certainly was not. Fulfilling once I nailed it? YES. Were we both thrilled at the result? YES.

Janine and I practiced her hair style a couple of times, trying out different parts, sectioning, and type of roll. She found a few celebrity pics for inspiration- Tyra Banks, Katherine Heigl. This bride has a head of beautifully thick, blonde hair that had to be pulled and rolled into the perfect coiffure. I appreciate her for being SO patient until I found the magic combination.

This Laguna Beach wedding was held at Seven-Degrees. It was my first time here, and I marveled at the combination of the natural setting against glass + steel modern architecture. I was also a fan of the balanced asymmetry, and these lovely ladies below.
Thank you to Duke Photography for these amazing images!

When Duke arrived, Janine's hair was complete
+ was beginning her makeup.

I used a metallic grey eyeshadow + other
colors by MAC cosmetics

She's obviously VERY excited to wear the dress

Duke is able to make every bride look like
a high fashion model. Incredible!

I can't get over how flawless, tan, sculpted & glowing she is!
Do you notice those earrings?
A natural smile takes the cake. So do those lashes!

2 Sutherlands + Metallic Eyes

Thoroughbreds and jewels? Well, I say girls like nothing more than ponies and shiny things to make them feel pretty. The beauty above is world renowned jockey and actress, Chantal Sutherland wearing designs by Caldwell Sutherland. It's no coincidence these 2 Sutherlands worked together for this shoot. After seeing Chantal race at Santa Anita, Caldwell approached Chantal about being the face of her company and invited her to create her own "inspired by Chantal" line.
LA photographer, Ellice Parodi of ES Photography called me up and invited me to the horse races for this one! I was very excited because we would be the only public in the beautiful race park.
After doing makeup and hair for Chantal in the tiny female jockey quarters at Santa Anita Park, I can say that I hope more women aspire to be big-time jockeys like Chantal. She has an incredible race record, acts on a HBO show, and models.
Please enjoy these beautiful pictures by Ellice! For more information, please visit Chantal's and Caldwell's websites.
Metallic eyes are popping! Hair curled with a clip-less
tapered iron by Enzo Milano

her eyes sparkle as much as the jewelry! she's wearing a coral shadow in the
inner eye, then smokey grey on the outer corners

I LOVE the sexy attitude in this picture. Plus, her boots are TDF.

A jockey's version of Boudoir, no doubt

DtLA Engagement Session+Heather Kincaid+Smokey Eyes

Many brides use their makeup trial for their engagement session. It's a great opportunity to test the photographic nature of the makeup products, test makeup durability, and getting professional makeup is going to make you look REALLY good.
Sherry loves a dramatic eye, so smokey eye makeup was definitely needed. It may not be right for everyone, but this look really makes the eyes POP!

5-Star rated wedding + destination photographer, Heather Kincaid , brought Sherry and Mike to DtLA (that's downtown LA) for a timeless urban look; a story of young Love in a city, two stylish people who found each other amid million of LA inhabitants. It's amazing to me how Heather shot this couple without anyone else in the background! Truly, they only have eyes for each other.

These gorgeous park shots are, I'm only guessing, from historic Griffith Park, a location only a few miles north of the city. Naturally, our bride changed her outfit befitting the wilderness but didn't compromise her style. What I love about this picture above is how her eye shadow and blouse have the same hue, and how milky and flawless her skin looks. They look pretty cute, too.
